Barrister Aqeel Malik, the prime minister’s adviser on law and justice, stated on Saturday that the goal of the 26th Amendment was to increase judicial independence by ensuring that nominations are public.

In a statement, he continued, “The deletion of suo motu power aims to stop judiciary abuse and restrict the same while enhanced oversight by parliament provides that there is balance to such appointments.” This is the same situation in democracy across the world.

According to the PM’s advisor, the amendment also promoted economic fairness and established the basic right to a clean environment. He underlined that the government’s dedication to openness, inclusion, and fairness was reflected in these measures, which were intended to strengthen democratic institutions and benefit citizens.

In response to PTI Raoof Hasan’s comments, he stated that the amendment’s purpose was to promote institutional cohesion and preserve democratic values; therefore, the accusations of judicial compromise and political involvement were baseless.
