Today marks the 71st anniversary of the death of Master Ghulam Haider, a legendary composer who shaped the musical landscape of both Indian and Pakistani cinema. Born in 1908 in Narowal, British India, Master Ghulam Haider began his illustrious career in the Bombay film industry, where he made his mark as one of the pioneering composers of his time.

His contribution to the film industry went beyond just composition—he also mentored some of the most iconic voices in music history. Renowned playback singers, including Shamshad Begum, Noor Jehan, and Lata Mangeshkar, were among his disciples, benefiting from his guidance and musical expertise.

Master Ghulam Haider’s legacy includes music for several iconic films that have become staples in the history of cinema, such as Yamla Jatt, Khazanchi, Poonji, Shaheed, Humayun, and Majboor. After the partition of India in 1947, he relocated to Lahore and became a key figure in the emerging Pakistani film industry. His first musical composition for a Pakistani film was for Shahida, and he continued to contribute to the success of films like Beqarar, Gulnaar, Akeli, and Bheegi Palkein.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the arts, the Government of Pakistan honoured him with the prestigious Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and the Pride of Performance award. His music not only touched the hearts of millions but also set a foundation for future generations of musicians and composers on the subcontinent.

Master Ghulam Haider passed away on this day in 1953 due to cancer, but his legacy continues to resonate in the world of music and cinema.
