Islamabad: In a move seen as water aggression, India has released a heavy flow of 22,000 cusecs of water into the Jhelum River by opening spillways of a dam located in Indian-occupied Kashmir.
According to the Director of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), the surge is currently passing through the 2-mile point of the Jhelum River, raising the threat level to moderate flooding. Residents have been urged to stay away from the riverbanks as a precaution.
Sources suggest that the release of water followed a recent attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Indian-occupied Kashmir, after which India made provocative statements, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed between Pakistan and India, is widely regarded as a rare example of successful transboundary water cooperation—enduring wars, military stand-offs, and political tensions.
In response, Pakistan’s National Security Committee has announced a series of lawful countermeasures under international law to address India’s unilateral actions.
