Heatwave Grips Pakistan, Mercury Soars Across Major Cities

A severe heatwave has swept across much of Pakistan, pushing temperatures well above seasonal norms, with the highest recorded at 43°C in Sindh’s Dadu and Sukkur districts, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
Several other regions are also experiencing sweltering heat. Larkana, Jacobabad, and Bhakkar saw the mercury climb to 42°C, while Multan, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, and Sahiwal recorded 41°C. Lahore remained slightly cooler at 39°C, followed by Peshawar at 38°C and Islamabad at 37°C.
In Karachi, the maximum temperature was recorded at 34°C, but humidity levels caused a feel-like temperature of around 39°C, creating discomfort for residents in the coastal city.
The Met Office has issued warnings of continuing extreme heatwave conditions, expected to persist through May 19 in upper areas and until May 20 in southern parts of the country. Temperatures are forecast to remain 5 to 7°C above normal in central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. In Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, temperatures could stay 4 to 6°C above the average.
Medical experts have urged the public to take precautions, stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, and maintain hydration to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Relief, however, may be on the horizon. A westerly weather system is predicted to enter northern Pakistan on May 19, potentially bringing rainfall to Islamabad, the Pothohar region, northeast Punjab, upper KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir on May 19 and 20.
