JAIPUR – In the aftermath of a recent ceasefire agreement with Pakistan, a new wave of cultural nationalism has emerged in parts of India, particularly influencing everyday traditions and branding, including the renaming of traditional Indian sweets.

According to reports from Indian media, sweet shop owners in Jaipur, Rajasthan, have altered the names of popular local confections to reflect a more nationalistic tone. Sweets like Moti Pak, Aam Pak, and Gond Pak have now been rebranded as Moti Shree, Aam Shree, and Gond Shree, respectively.

The renaming stems from an effort to remove the word “Pak”, a commonly used suffix in Indian sweets, which is now being emotionally linked by some to Pakistan. This change, shopkeepers say, is intended to align with the national sentiment following “Operation Sindoor” — a recent military operation that has been widely covered in Indian media.

“We’re showing support for our troops and embracing a national identity,” said one shop owner, emphasising that the changes have been well received by customers.

The shift in nomenclature doesn’t end with desserts. Local reports from Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan indicate that several newborns have recently been named “Sindoor” — a symbolic gesture believed to honour the military campaign and the broader nationalistic wave it has inspired.

Cultural analysts note that while such symbolic changes reflect deep-rooted patriotism, they also underscore how political and military developments can influence everyday cultural expressions in society.
