PM Mette Frederiksen Urges Trump to Stop Threatening Statements Over Greenland

Copenhagen has witnessed a strong diplomatic reaction as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to stop issuing statements and threats regarding the possible takeover of Greenland. She described such comments as unhelpful and provocative.
In her remarks, Frederiksen said that the idea of the United States taking over Greenland is “completely meaningless” and has no legal or political basis. She emphasized that the U.S. has no authority to annex any of the three countries that form the Danish realm.
Her response came after President Trump once again declared that Greenland was “necessary” for the United States and that America should acquire it for defensive purposes. This repeated insistence raised concerns within the Danish government.
The Danish Prime Minister stated that the United States, being a long-standing ally, should refrain from threatening a nation and its people who have clearly stated they are not for sale and do not wish to be taken over by another power.
US Attack in Venezuela Kills 40, Claims Local Official
The heightened reaction in Denmark follows recent global developments, particularly after the U.S. military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the ousting and arrest of President Nicolás Maduro. The incident has fueled concerns in Denmark that Washington may resort to similar actions elsewhere.
Frederiksen reaffirmed that Greenland is a self-governing territory and any decisions regarding its future lie solely with its people and the Danish government. She stressed that Denmark will not allow external pressure or coercion in this matter.
Analysts believe the exchange marks a new diplomatic challenge between the two nations. If Washington does not soften its stance on Greenland, tensions could rise between Denmark and the United States in the coming months.
