Bangladesh coach Phil Simmons confirmed that Litton Das will bat at No. 5 in the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan starting March 11. The change comes as Bangladesh reshapes their stagnant middle order. Regulars Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah are no longer in that position.
Litton returns to the ODI side after nine months, having failed to reach double figures in eight ODIs since December 2023. Simmons highlighted Litton’s ability against spin as key to the decision. He believes Litton’s experience will strengthen the middle order, which has been a weak point for Bangladesh.
Simmons said it is challenging for a player to keep wicket for 50 overs and then open the batting. Litton, however, is comfortable playing anywhere in the batting lineup. His skill against spin makes him ideal for the middle-order role, according to Simmons.
Bangladesh dropped Jaker Ali and Nurul Hasan but retained Mahidul Islam Ankon, who batted at No. 5 against West Indies last October. Ankon scored 69 runs in three matches but did not accelerate the scoring rate.

Litton last batted at No. 5 in the 2019 ODI World Cup, scoring an unbeaten 94 against West Indies. Most of his ODI career has been spent in the top four. Simmons said Litton accepted the new role without hesitation. He is willing to do whatever the team needs.
Bangladesh return to international cricket after three months, having missed the T20 World Cup amid political issues. Simmons said missing the tournament was hurtful, but domestic one-day matches kept players focused. He added that the team is now regaining its 50-over rhythm.
Simmons wants Bangladesh to bat like they did in the third ODI against West Indies last October. The team scored 296 runs on a spinning pitch, with the top-order performing strongly. He said progress is key, and the wickets in the upcoming series look even better.
