Gul Plaza Tragedy: Police Surgeon Dr. Samia Submits Medical Report to Commission

KARACHI – The Gul Plaza tragedy has left the city in shock. Police surgeon Dr. Samia submitted her responses to the commission’s questionnaire. She confirmed that most deaths resulted from smoke inhalation and fire. Authorities reported that eight injured people received medical treatment. In contrast, 73 bodies and remains were recovered from the site.
Dr. Samia explained that seven bodies were complete, while 66 were badly burned. Post-mortem examinations revealed suffocation as the primary cause of death. Most remains were fully charred, making complete examinations difficult. Evidence indicates that victims were alive when the fire started. Minor injuries were observed on some complete bodies, but they did not result from stampedes or building collapse.
The staggered removal of bodies suggests that many victims were trapped inside for a long time. Rescue efforts, according to the Gul Plaza president, were slow. Delays likely contributed to the high number of fatalities. Officials continue to investigate how the fire spread and why rescue responses were delayed.

Dr. Samia also said samples were collected to check for toxic gases or chemicals. Toxicology reports are still pending, and authorities await further results. All medicolegal reports have been submitted to the relevant authorities for review. Experts hope these reports will clarify additional causes of death.
Investigators continue to study the tragedy to prevent future incidents. Authorities urge building owners to follow fire safety protocols strictly. Meanwhile, the city mourns the loss of 73 lives in this devastating fire. Families and residents demand accountability and better emergency responses in the future.
