Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has described the scale of killings in recent Israeli strikes on Lebanon as “horrific”, urging urgent global action to stop what he termed an unfolding “nightmare.”

In a strongly worded statement, Türk said the level of destruction and civilian casualties witnessed within hours was deeply alarming. “The scale of the killing and destruction in Lebanon today is nothing short of horrific,” he stated, adding that such violence, coming so soon after a ceasefire agreement involving Iran and the United States, was difficult to comprehend.

He warned that the attacks were placing immense strain on an already fragile peace in the region, one that civilians desperately need. The UN rights chief emphasised that continued escalation risks derailing diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilising the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu signalled that Israel remains prepared for further confrontation if required. Speaking on Wednesday, he stated that despite the truce between Washington and Tehran, Israel is ready to “return to battle at any moment” against Iran.

The developments have raised fears of renewed escalation across the region, particularly as tensions remain high despite recent diplomatic breakthroughs. Observers warn that any further military action could undermine ceasefire efforts and widen the conflict.

Human rights organisations have also voiced concern over the rising civilian toll, calling for adherence to international humanitarian law and the protection of non-combatants.

The UN has reiterated its call for restraint from all parties, stressing that a military solution will not bring lasting peace. Instead, officials have urged renewed diplomatic engagement to prevent further bloodshed and stabilise the region.
