US Vice President JD Vance is set to visit Islamabad this week, taking on a critical diplomatic mission to turn a fragile Iran ceasefire into a lasting peace agreement.

Assigned by President Donald Trump, Vance’s role marks one of the most significant challenges of his political career. The 41-year-old, who has largely stayed out of the spotlight during the Middle East conflict, will now lead high-stakes negotiations beginning Saturday.

Experts say the move is unusual, as vice presidents rarely head formal international negotiations. Aaron Wolf Mannes of the University of Maryland described the mission as “high risk, high reward,” noting the potential impact on Vance’s political future.

Vance, known for his anti-interventionist stance and past service in the United States Marine Corps, had reportedly opposed military action against Iran before the conflict began. However, he publicly supported the administration after the war was launched.

He will be joined by key figures including Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The White House expressed optimism that the talks could lead to long-term peace in the Middle East.

Analysts suggest Iran may view Vance as a more acceptable negotiating partner due to his earlier reservations about the war. Recently, he adopted a more measured tone regarding tensions involving Lebanon.

Despite this, Vance has faced criticism for past confrontations, including a high-profile dispute with Volodymyr Zelensky earlier in 2025.

The outcome of the Islamabad talks could significantly influence Vance’s political trajectory, particularly as he is seen as a potential contender in the 2028 US presidential election.
