US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Pope Leo XIV following the pontiff’s remarks on foreign policy and immigration, escalating tensions between the two figures.

In a post on Truth Social late Sunday, Trump described the pope as “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy,” adding that he was “not a big fan” of the Catholic leader. His comments came days after Pope Leo condemned threats of escalating violence in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, calling such rhetoric “truly unacceptable.”

The pope, who became the first US-born leader of the Catholic Church last year, has been vocal about the need to reduce violence and pursue diplomatic solutions. Speaking at St. Peter’s Square during Palm Sunday, he criticised global leaders who engage in war, stating that prayers from those with “hands full of blood” are rejected by God.

Pope Leo has also raised concerns about US immigration policies, questioning whether harsh treatment of migrants aligns with pro-life values. He has consistently called for a more compassionate approach, urging reflection on how vulnerable populations are treated.

Trump, however, defended his stance, arguing that stricter immigration policies are necessary to reduce crime. He also suggested that the pope’s election may have been influenced by his American background, claiming it was intended to counter his presidency.

The exchange highlights a growing divide between the two on key global issues, including conflict resolution and migration. It also echoes Trump’s earlier clashes with Pope Francis, who had similarly criticised his immigration policies during his initial presidential campaign.

The Vatican has not yet issued an official response to Trump’s latest remarks.
