The Power Division said on Wednesday that electricity supply remained stable during peak demand hours last night, despite increased consumption reported from several provinces.

In an official statement, the spokesperson said improved water releases from major dams played a key role in stabilising the system, enabling the generation of 5,125 megawatts (MW) of electricity during peak hours. The availability of hydropower helped ease pressure on the national grid and supported overall supply continuity.

The statement added that around 400MW of electricity was also successfully transmitted from the southern region to the central grid due to improved transmission stability, further strengthening the distribution network.

Distribution companies (DISCOs), according to the spokesperson, managed to maintain relatively stable electricity supply even during high-demand periods. As a result, load management was limited to approximately one to two hours in most areas, depending on local conditions.

However, the Power Division clarified that economic load management will continue in areas with high transmission and distribution losses. It emphasized that economic load management is distinct from peak-time load shedding, which is applied during system constraints.

The spokesperson also noted that peak-time load shedding is expected to be eliminated once sufficient liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies become available for power generation. Currently, around 5,500MW of installed generation capacity remains idle due to LNG shortages, limiting the system’s ability to fully meet demand.

Separately, Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari has taken notice of power distribution companies purchasing electricity from small producers in violation of the prescribed merit order. He directed all DISCOs to immediately align their procurement practices with regulations issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), ensuring compliance with the established economic dispatch framework.
