Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a plan to provide electric motorcycles to government employees up to BPS-16 through affordable installment schemes, as part of Pakistan’s broader push to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

The announcement came during a high-level meeting in Islamabad focused on expanding electric transport across the country. Officials briefed the prime minister that the government is targeting a major shift toward cleaner mobility, with plans to convert 30% of all vehicles in Pakistan to electric power within the next five years.

According to officials, the transition could significantly reduce dependence on imported fuel and is expected to save approximately $4.5 billion in foreign exchange. The initiative is also being positioned as a step toward environmental sustainability and improved energy security amid rising energy demands.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed relevant departments to accelerate ongoing efforts under the National Electric Vehicle Policy and ensure timely implementation of the electric motorcycle programme for government employees. He emphasized that subsidy distribution must remain transparent and efficient so that benefits reach eligible recipients without delay.

The meeting was informed that progress is already underway in the EV sector. So far, authorities have issued 72 manufacturing licenses for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, along with four licenses for electric car production. Additionally, 123 applications have been received for establishing EV charging stations across Pakistan, indicating growing private-sector interest in the sector.

Officials said the government is working to build the necessary infrastructure to support large-scale adoption of electric vehicles, including charging networks and local manufacturing capacity. The initiative is expected to reduce transport costs, cut emissions, and gradually shift Pakistan toward a more sustainable energy future.

The electric motorcycle scheme for government employees is expected to be rolled out in phases once final approval and financing mechanisms are completed.
