Azerbaijan Bans Cousin Marriages Under New Family Code Amendments

In a progressive move aimed at aligning national laws with global standards and safeguarding public health, the government of Azerbaijan has introduced key amendments to its Family Code, effectively banning marriages between individuals who share the same biological grandparents.

Under the revised law, close blood relatives such as first cousins, uncles and nieces, or aunts and nephews are now prohibited from marrying each other. The move extends the country’s existing restrictions on marriages between direct relatives, adopted children and adoptive parents, or legally incapacitated individuals.

Authorities have emphasised that the decision is rooted in scientific concerns, particularly to prevent the increased risk of genetic disorders in offspring born from consanguineous marriages. Officials also noted that the amendment brings Azerbaijan’s family legislation closer in line with international health and legal frameworks.

The new law has sparked discussions among citizens and rights groups, with many lauding the government’s step toward strengthening family health standards and modernising social policies.
