Bangladesh court orders asset seizure of former cricketer Shakib Al Hasan

Legal troubles have intensified for former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan as a court has ordered the seizure of his assets in a financial dispute.
Shakib, who previously served as a Member of Parliament under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party, is facing legal action over a bounced cheque case. Reports indicate that he established a shrimp farm in Satkhira in 2016, which has remained inactive since 2021. The company had taken a bank loan, but due to insufficient funds, repayment cheques bounced.
According to foreign media reports, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zia Uddin Rahman has ordered the confiscation of Shakib’s properties.
The legal case began in October 2024 when a Bangladeshi bank issued a legal notice regarding the bounced cheques. Later, on December 24, a case was filed against Shakib and three other officials of his company.
On December 18, 2023, the court directed Shakib to appear before it on January 19, 2024, but he failed to do so. Following his absence, an arrest warrant was issued against him.
