Brazil cancels Akash missile deal with India after Operation Sandhoor failures

New Delhi: Following India’s reported failure in Operation Sandhoor, Brazil has officially ended negotiations to purchase the Akash surface-to-air missile system, dealing a blow to India’s defence export ambitions.

According to the Deccan Herald and Defence Express, Brazil dropped the deal after India was unable to offer the latest version of the Akash missile, instead proposing an outdated model. Brazilian defence officials reportedly deemed the system “obsolete and ineffective.”

The scrapped deal, estimated at ₹5 billion (approx. $60 million USD), marks a significant diplomatic and commercial setback for India.

Brazil is now in advanced discussions with Italy for the acquisition of the cutting-edge EMADS (Enhanced Modular Air Defence Solutions) system, further weakening India’s position in the international arms market.

This comes amid growing scrutiny of Indian defence technology after disappointing battlefield performance during Operation Sandhoor, which has raised serious concerns over the reliability of Indian-made weapons.
