China has thrown its weight behind Pakistan following rising tensions with India after the recent Pahalgam incident in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed solidarity with Pakistan, voicing support for Islamabad’s right to defend its sovereignty and security. “China fully understands Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns and supports its efforts to protect its national interests,” Wang said. He also called for a fair and timely investigation into the Pahalgam attack, where casualties were reported.

Wang urged both Pakistan and India to exercise restraint and prioritise dialogue to ease tensions and maintain regional stability. His comments come at a critical time as relations between Islamabad and New Delhi deteriorate.

Tensions escalated sharply after India announced the revocation of the Indus Waters Treaty, downgraded diplomatic relations with Pakistan, and ordered the closure of the Attari border crossing.

In response, Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) convened an emergency meeting to review the situation. The NSC rejected India’s accusations regarding the Pahalgam attack and approved a set of countermeasures, including the immediate closure of the Wagah border.

The committee also endorsed recommendations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to deliver a strong diplomatic response to India’s recent actions. Further, Pakistan reserved the right to suspend all bilateral agreements, including the historic Simla Pact signed in 1972.

During the meeting, the NSC expressed confidence in the operational readiness of the armed forces and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defend its national interests.
