Chikungunya
China’s Guangdong province is facing a serious outbreak of the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus. Over 7,000 cases have been reported since July, with nearly 3,000 in just the past week.

The city of Foshan remains the worst affected, while infections have spread to 12 other cities, including Hong Kong. Health officials are on high alert as the situation worsens.

In response, Chinese authorities have launched strict anti-mosquito measures to curb the virus. Residents face fines of up to $1,400 for keeping stagnant water, which breeds mosquitoes.

The government is also using innovative techniques such as releasing mosquito-eating fish and “elephant mosquitoes” that neutralise disease-carrying insects. Drones are being used to detect mosquito hotspots.

Chikungunya spreads through mosquito bites and causes fever, rash, and intense joint pain. It does not transmit directly between people. The virus has sparked growing health concerns across the region, especially in crowded urban areas. Public anxiety is rising due to the fast spread and severity of symptoms.

Meanwhile, the strict enforcement of virus-control measures has triggered public debate on Chinese social media. Many citizens have compared the new rules to COVID-era lockdowns. Some support the firm response, while others call for better communication and less aggressive tactics. Authorities continue to urge cooperation and public awareness.

The government is closely monitoring the outbreak and expanding control efforts to stop further spread. Health workers are spraying insecticide, checking homes, and distributing prevention tips. With cases rising quickly, experts warn that community participation is crucial in preventing a larger health crisis.
