Construction of Bhains Colony Bridge Suspended by Court

A local court in Malir has ordered an immediate halt to construction on the Bhains Colony railway bridge. The decision came after residents filed a petition, claiming the project had blocked all access roads to their homes. The civil senior judge heard initial arguments from both parties before issuing the suspension order. The court stated that work must remain paused until alternative routes are provided for residents. This ruling brings a sudden stop to a major infrastructure project that began just three days earlier.
The Bhains Colony railway bridge project was launched by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab earlier this week. The bridge was expected to improve traffic flow and reduce accidents near the Cattle Colony crossing. However, local opposition quickly emerged due to road blockages caused by the construction. Residents argued the project had made it impossible for them to reach their homes. As a result, the court stepped in to protect public access and ordered the work to stop.
Despite the setback, Mayor Wahab continues to push forward with other development projects in Malir. On Wednesday, he inaugurated a new Rs1.6 billion flyover on Khalid bin Waleed Road. This flyover aims to link the National Highway with the Mehran Highway and ease traffic pressure in the area. Wahab said the project will take 12 months to complete and will benefit millions of citizens. He promised the flyover would bring long-term relief and safety to commuters.
During the ceremony, the mayor highlighted the benefits of the new four-lane bridge. He noted that it would significantly reduce traffic accidents at busy railway crossings. Wahab stood with other elected officials and reassured citizens of the government’s development goals. He emphasized that the Pakistan Peoples Party is committed to improving Karachi’s roads and infrastructure. The mayor said modernizing the city is a top priority for the administration.
Although the court order on the Bhains Colony project is a setback, city officials remain confident in their broader plans. They are now required to address public concerns before resuming bridge work. Meanwhile, progress on other infrastructure projects continues across the city. As the mayor faces legal and logistical challenges, he remains focused on delivering long-term solutions. The coming weeks will show how the city balances development with residents’ rights and access.
