Depression Over Arabian Sea

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that a weather depression over the eastern Arabian Sea has continued to move in a north-northwesterly direction over the past 24 hours. The system was last observed near latitude 16.4°N and longitude 70.4°E, approximately 1,004 kilometers south-southeast of Karachi.

According to the PMD’s Cyclone Warning Center in Karachi, the depression is currently positioned about 400 kilometers southwest of Mumbai (India) over the east-central Arabian Sea. The system is expected to maintain a northwestward trajectory across the east-central Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours.

The Met Office confirmed that there is no threat to Pakistan’s coastal areas at this stage. However, the department continues to closely monitor the system’s movement.

Earlier this week, a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea intensified into a depression. Initially, it was centered near latitude 8.6°N and longitude 67.6°E — roughly 1,800 kilometers southeast of Karachi.

In recent months, similar weather systems have developed over the Arabian Sea. Notably, in October, a low-pressure area had strengthened into a depression about 440 kilometers south of Karachi, triggering high waves and rough sea conditions along Sindh’s coast. That system eventually intensified into Severe Cyclonic Storm “Shakhti” over the west-central and northwest Arabian Sea.

The PMD has advised fishermen to remain cautious and stay updated on weather advisories, though normal activities along Pakistan’s coastline remain unaffected at present.

According to the PMD’s Cyclone Warning Center in Karachi, the system was centered near Latitude 9.7°N and Longitude 67.7°E, approximately 1,690 kilometers south-southeast of Karachi and 570 kilometers west-southwest of Lakshadweep (India).
