Digital recording system for births and deaths introduced in hospitals

As part of the Government of Pakistan’s “Uraan Pakistan” initiative to promote digital transformation, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has partnered with provincial governments to roll out a digital system for registration of births and deaths in hospitals and health centres across the country.
This initiative falls under NADRA’s broader National Registration and Biometric Policy Framework, aimed at modernising the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system. Through this new digital platform, vital life events such as births and deaths will be directly recorded in real time, allowing for accurate and timely updates to the national citizen database.
The collected data will not only ensure that correct population records serve as a cornerstone for the development of digital identity systems and Pakistan’s digital economy. This effort is expected to enhance e-governance, policy-making, and public service delivery.
In collaboration with the World Bank, NADRA is also implementing the Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP), which focuses on expanding digital identity and service access nationwide.
To ensure the system’s nationwide adoption, NADRA is entering into formal agreements with all provincial and regional governments. A recent signing ceremony took place in Karachi, where Sindh’s Minister for Local Government, Housing, and Town Planning, Saeed Ghani, attended. The agreement was signed by the Health Secretary, Local Government Secretary, and NADRA’s Director General for Karachi.
Earlier, a similar agreement was finalised in Quetta between the Government of Balochistan and NADRA. Agreements with other provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to follow in the coming days.
