Donald Trump Explains Reasons Behind Republican Defeat in New York Mayoral Election

U.S. President Donald Trump has pointed out two main reasons for the Republican loss in the New York mayoral election, where Democrat candidate Zohran Mamdani defeated Trump-backed Andrew Cuomo.

Despite Trump’s active campaigning and strong opposition, Mamdani — the first Muslim Mayor of New York — achieved a decisive victory, signaling a new shift in the city’s political landscape.

Following the announcement of results, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, stating:

“According to voters, there are two reasons for the Republican defeat — first, I wasn’t on the ballot; and second, the ongoing government shutdown.”

Meanwhile, independent candidate and Trump’s endorsed nominee Andrew Cuomo accepted his defeat and congratulated Mamdani, saying:

“I respect the decision of the people of New York and congratulate Zahran on his victory.”
