Electricity Prices Drop

ISLAMABAD: In a positive development for electricity consumers across Pakistan, power tariffs are expected to decrease by 37 paisas per unit under the monthly Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) for September.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), proposing the reduction based on lower fuel costs for the month. NEPRA is scheduled to hold a public hearing on October 29 to review the proposal.

According to CPPA data, the total electricity generation in September was 12.59 billion units, while 12.21 billion units were delivered to distribution companies (DISCOs). The cost of generation averaged Rs 7.09 per unit, which is lower than the reference cost of Rs 7.65 per unit.

Breakdown of Electricity Sources in SeptemberHydropower: 37.99%

  • Local coal: 9.54%

  • Imported coal: 8.10%

  • Natural gas: 14.41%

  • LNG: 14.41%

  • Nuclear energy: 17.69%

  • Furnace oil: 0.77%

Hydropower continued to be the leading source of electricity, while furnace oil—one of the most expensive fuels—accounted for less than 1% of the generation mix.

If approved, the proposed rate cut will offer much-needed relief to households and businesses struggling with high electricity bills amid ongoing economic challenges.

Electricity prices across Pakistan may increase by Rs0.19 per unit under the Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) for August 2025. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) submitted a petition requesting the hike, which will be reviewed by NEPRA in a public hearing today. The proposed increase would also apply to K-Electric consumers. This adjustment comes as part of NEPRA’s monthly fuel price review. If approved, the hike will put more pressure on consumers already facing high utility costs.
