A fire that erupted near the Korangi Creek oil refinery in North Karachi remains out of control after 15 hours, following an accident during repair work that damaged a gas pipeline.

According to a spokesperson from the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), the incident occurred around midnight when a crew from the Water and Sewerage Board accidentally damaged the gas pipeline while carrying out repairs. The SSGC spokesperson clarified that the pipeline was empty at the time of the damage, and no gas was present.

However, the situation escalated during Sehri hours when gas supply resumed. It is believed that a resident lighting a cigarette in the area ignited the released gas, sparking the fire.

Despite swift efforts by the fire brigade, the fire could not be immediately controlled due to the large size of the gas pipeline and the ongoing risk of further explosions. As a precautionary measure, SSGC decided to temporarily cut off the gas supply from the local town border station to prevent any further escalation.

SSGC officials have confirmed that repairs on the affected pipeline have now been completed, and gas supply will resume as scheduled.
