Severe flooding in the Ravi River has caused water to enter the historic Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib near the Pakistan-India border.

According to the project’s deputy secretary, nearly 100 people are trapped inside the complex, including 18 local pilgrims and staff members.

He confirmed that the viral images of water inside Kartarpur were taken by his own staff. He stressed that it is floodwater, not rainwater.

Officials explained that a breach in the Ravi River embankment near Kartarpur allowed floodwaters to rush inside, reaching up to 10 feet.

The deputy secretary said the stranded people include pilgrims, workers, and religious caretakers. However, no rescue or emergency teams have reached them yet.

Authorities are attempting to arrange a helicopter evacuation to airlift those trapped inside the gurdwara to safety.

Earlier, local journalist Mian Shahid Iqbal reported that floodwaters entered the shrine after a protective bund near Kartarpur collapsed.

Flooding has also submerged the Shakargarh-Narowal national highway. According to the Deputy Commissioner, more than 250 people have been shifted to safe areas.

Strong currents in Ravi River and nearby streams like Ojh and Jassar are putting further pressure on local communities, creating dangerous conditions.

Rescue operations are underway by Pakistan’s armed forces and emergency teams. So far, 409 people and livestock have been rescued, but access remains difficult in several areas.
