Global Sikh Anger as India Bans Pilgrimage to Pakistan

India has stopped Sikh pilgrims from traveling to Pakistan for Guru Nanak’s Prakash Purab, citing security concerns. The decision, made by the Indian Home Ministry, has faced heavy backlash from Sikh communities. Thousands of pilgrims had planned to visit holy sites across Pakistan for the celebrations. Now, they have been barred from making the journey. Sikh leaders say this is a clear violation of their religious freedom.

Sikh organizations across India and abroad have strongly condemned the move. The Chandigarh Singh Sabha called it a “serious violation” of Sikh religious rights. The Sikh Federation UK accused the Modi government of double standards. They pointed out that while political and sports events with Pakistan continue, Sikh pilgrims are denied access. Many believe the decision targets the community unfairly.

Voices of dissent are also rising within India. Journalist Rajdeep Sardesai questioned why sports ties are allowed, but not religious travel. The chief minister of Indian Punjab also criticized the ban. He said the move reflects the central government’s discriminatory stance toward Sikhs. These remarks show growing concern within India about the treatment of minorities.

The ban has reopened old wounds for many Sikhs. Critics recalled past grievances under BJP rule, including the 1984 riots and flood mismanagement. Some also pointed to water disputes affecting Punjab. Now, preventing pilgrims from visiting sacred sites adds to a long list of concerns. Many feel the community is being increasingly sidelined.

Meanwhile, Sikh leaders praised Pakistan’s support for their religious rights. They highlighted the Kartarpur Corridor and recent restoration of Gurdwaras damaged by floods. One leader said, “Pakistan is ready to welcome Sikh brothers with open arms.” Sikh groups have now urged the international community to intervene. They want global leaders to speak against what they call India’s religious discrimination.
