ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers in Pakistan can expect some relief as the power tariff is likely to decrease by Rs1.30 per unit for the month, bringing hope to households and businesses struggling with high electricity costs.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for a reduction in the monthly fuel price adjustment for December. If approved, the change will lead to a Rs1.30 per unit decrease in the electricity tariff for the upcoming month. The petition will be heard by NEPRA tomorrow.

The CPPA’s request highlights that the estimated fuel cost per unit of electricity in December was Rs10.63, but the actual cost turned out to be lower at Rs9.60 per unit. In December, a total of 7.516 billion units of electricity were supplied to the distribution companies (Discos).

A breakdown of power generation for December shows that 22.80% of electricity was generated from hydropower, 10.06% from local coal, 1.59% from imported coal, and 0.03% from furnace oil. Additionally, 12.31% of the electricity was produced using local gas, 20.70% from liquefied natural gas (LNG), and 26.48% from nuclear sources.
