ICC introduces new playing conditions in International Cricket

Author Avatar Web Desk | 2 weeks ago
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced major updates to the playing conditions across formats, aiming to improve the flow and fairness of the game. These changes apply with immediate effect in the new ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Stop Clock Introduced in Test Cricket

To tackle slow overrates, a 60-second countdown (stop clock) will now apply between overs in Test matches: Fielding teams must start the next over within one minute. Two warnings will be issued for delays. A 5-run penalty will be imposed on the third offence. Deliberate use of saliva on the ball will not lead to ball replacement. If it alters the ball’s condition, 5 penalty runs will be awarded to the batting side.

Penalty for Deliberate Short Runs

If a batter is found intentionally taking a short run, the batting side will face a 5-run penalty. The bowling team will have the right to choose which batter takes strike after the incident.

Catch Fairness Review Enhanced

If a catch is in doubt, the third umpire will now check both the no-ball and the fairness of the catch.

Previously, a no-ball would automatically end the review. On a no-ball, a clean catch gives the batting side 1 extra run; if the catch is not clean, runs taken will count.

These updates are part of the ICC’s ongoing efforts to modernise cricket and ensure fair play.
