India Suspends Postal Services to the United States Amid Trade Tensions

India has suspended postal services to the United States, citing difficulties caused by new American customs rules. The suspension began on 25 August. The Department of Posts, under the Ministry of Communications, announced the decision on Saturday.
According to the statement, only letters, documents, and gifts worth up to $100 will still be accepted. The suspension applies to all other postal items. Officials explained that the move was necessary due to practical challenges created by recent American regulations.
The Department of Posts clarified that the suspension directly relates to rules being enforced under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). These rules are set to take effect at the end of this month. Authorities stressed that the decision is temporary but unavoidable.
Meanwhile, the development comes against a backdrop of rising trade tensions between India and the United States. Recently, President Donald Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods. Additionally, India faces another 25 per cent penalty on its purchase of Russian oil.
As a result, the effective tariff burden has increased to nearly 50 per cent, creating significant economic pressure. Analysts say this has strained relations between New Delhi and Washington further. Experts believe the suspension of postal services highlights the depth of the dispute.
Under the new executive order, all international transport carriers must collect and submit customs duties. This includes those operating under the international postal system and carriers approved by US Customs and Border Protection. Observers warn that the measure could disrupt trade and public communication between both countries.
