Pakistan’s internet services have been severely disrupted in several cities, with users facing significant issues related to both Wi-Fi and mobile data. The slow internet speeds have caused widespread frustration among users in major cities such as Karachi, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, with complaints about the unavailability of key social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

According to reports, users are experiencing difficulties uploading and downloading images and videos, and many are forced to use VPNs to access social media apps. Browsing and WhatsApp downloading are nearly impossible in many areas, further exacerbating the challenges faced by internet users. In some cases, VPNs have also stopped working, adding to the woes of business owners and individuals who rely on the Internet for their daily activities.

The ongoing disruption has made basic tasks, such as sending and receiving images, videos, and voice notes on WhatsApp and other apps, extremely difficult. Freelancers, digital marketers, students attending online classes, and remote workers are particularly affected by the internet slowdowns, struggling to meet their work and study commitments.

In response to the situation, Shiza Fatima, the Minister of State for IT, addressed the issue in a statement to a private news channel, Geo News. She clarified that the X platform (formerly Twitter) was blocked on the orders of the Ministry of Interior, stating that fewer than 2% of Pakistanis use it. Fatima emphasized that blocking X was not an attempt to restrict freedom of expression but rather a measure to address cybersecurity concerns, citing the hundreds of cyberattacks Pakistan faces daily. She reassured that platforms like YouTube and Facebook remain accessible for free expression.

Furthermore, the minister stated that broadband services were not affected and that all digital platforms, including apps, were functioning correctly. She acknowledged that mobile towers in Pakistan are insufficient but assured that efforts are underway to improve the infrastructure. According to Fatima, Pakistan’s IT industry has made significant progress this year compared to the previous one.
