KP Confirms New Polio Case

Islamabad,  Another case of poliovirus has been confirmed in Pakistan, raising the nationwide tally to 30 cases so far this year, according to sources at the National Institute of Health (NIH).

The latest case has been reported from Torghar district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where a one-year-old boy from Union Council Ghari in tehsil Kundar was diagnosed with the virus. Health officials said the child began showing symptoms on September 19.

The case was confirmed by the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at NIH, which continues to monitor virus transmission across the country.

Of the total 30 cases in 2025, 19 have been recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, followed by nine in Sindh, and one case each in Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan, officials added.

Polio is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects children under the age of five and can lead to permanent paralysis. Health experts emphasize that the best protection against the disease is through repeated doses of the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) during every national campaign, along with timely routine immunization.

Health authorities have warned that the presence of new cases shows that children remain vulnerable, especially in regions with low vaccine coverage and resistance to immunization efforts.

Efforts are ongoing to strengthen awareness and improve vaccine outreach in high-risk districts.

Pakistan has confirmed a new case of polio in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, marking the first reported infection in the region since 2017. The affected child, a 23-month-old from the Gabar area of Tangir, tested positive for the poliovirus earlier this year.

Health officials at the National Institute of Health (NIH) announced that the genetic analysis of the virus sample classifies it within the YB3A4 poliovirus cluster. Notably, this strain has connections to Karachi, even though the infected child has no reported travel history.
