New Zealand’s Parliament erupted when members performed the Maori haka in protest against a bill aimed at reinterpreting the nation’s founding treaty.

Opposition MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi Clarke initiated the traditional group dance when questioned if her party supported the bill. The bill was presented for its first vote on Thursday.

Simultaneously, a hikoi (peaceful protest march) organised by a Maori rights organisation is underway, having reached Auckland with thousands of participants. This 10-day march started in New Zealand’s northern region and is now heading toward Wellington.

The protest aims to oppose the bill, which seeks to alter the interpretation of the treaty made with the Maori people.

The Maori community argues that the bill threatens their rights and culture and disregards the principles of their historic treaty.

This protest is stirring a significant response across New Zealand’s political landscape, with reactions emerging from various sectors.
