Meta Launches AI in Urdu to Boost Digital Transformation

Meta has officially launched Meta AI in Urdu for users in Pakistan. This announcement was made during the event “Future in Focus: AI and Innovation,” which was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT). The launch marks a significant step toward accelerating digital transformation in Pakistan. Meta aims to enhance accessibility by making its AI platform available in Urdu, allowing more users to engage with technology in their native language.
Along with the AI launch, Meta introduced an experimental program focused on AI education and digital transformation in Pakistan’s public sector. This initiative is designed to empower government institutions with Meta’s AI technologies to improve operations and public services. Meta also unveiled a localized guide titled “Transforming Public Sector Innovation in Asia Pacific with Llama,” developed in partnership with Deloitte. The guide outlines how Meta’s open-source AI model, Llama, can support digital governance and improve data sovereignty in Pakistan.
As part of its commitment to education, Meta launched the AI Literacy Program in partnership with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), MoITT, and atomcamp. The program will train 350 university teachers from non-computer science backgrounds across Pakistan. The goal is to equip educators with basic AI skills, enabling them to prepare students for the evolving digital landscape.
Meta also announced the Government Digital Transformation Xperience (GDTX) 2025 program. This initiative aims to provide Pakistani public institutions with access to Meta’s technologies and expertise. The program will bring together experts from both public and private sectors to share knowledge on effective digital transformation strategies.
Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, emphasized the importance of this partnership. She said, “Pakistan is moving toward a future where technology empowers every citizen.” She highlighted how the inclusion of Urdu in Meta AI will make technology more inclusive and accessible. Meta’s Director of Public Policy for South and Central Asia, Sarim Aziz, also noted that the move would help Pakistan’s public and educational sectors use AI more effectively.

As artificial intelligence reshapes the global information ecosystem, MMfD has consistently maintained that AI, if implemented ethically and thoughtfully, holds immense potential to support and elevate journalism. Rather than displacing journalists, MMfD envisions AI as a force multiplier, empowering media professionals with tools that enhance their capabilities, safeguard editorial independence, and contribute to the sustainability of the media sector.
Under the Sahafat.AI initiative, MMfD will collaborate with three of Pakistan’s leading newsrooms throughout 2025 to develop and deploy customised AI enterprise solutions, tailored to the unique editorial workflows, content priorities, and institutional structures of each newsroom. These AI solutions will be implemented across several core areas of journalistic work, including:
