ISLAMABAD – In a major step towards curbing identity fraud and misuse of mobile connections, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has announced the immediate blocking of SIM cards issued against expired or fake Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs).

The decision was made during a high-level meeting held at NADRA Headquarters on Friday, chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

According to the official statement, the first phase of the operation will focus on SIMs registered using CNICs that expired in 2017 or earlier. In subsequent phases, NADRA will apply the same policy to SIMs linked to CNICs that were cancelled after 2017.

Only valid and active CNICs will now be considered eligible for new SIM issuance and continuation of existing mobile services, as per the new directive.

NADRA Chairman emphasised that this action is aimed at eliminating mobile numbers issued to deceased individuals or people using expired or fake identity cards, which have often been exploited for illegal activities.

The move is part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening national security and streamlining the digital identity system.
