London— Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, has urged India to send its cricket team to Pakistan, emphasising that sporting exchanges could improve strained relations between the two nations. Nawaz Sharif made the remarks during a media interaction in London, where he was accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

Sharif commented on the potential impact of cricket diplomacy, particularly regarding India’s decision not to participate in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. “The Indian cricket team should come to Pakistan,” he stated. “If relations are tense, then steps like these are needed to foster understanding, and people are eager to see India play in Pakistan.” The former premier expressed optimism that such gestures could lead to greater camaraderie between the two countries.

Sharif also addressed broader diplomatic relations, particularly between Pakistan and the United States. Reflecting on past positive interactions, he stressed the need for both countries to work toward strengthening their ties. “Pakistan and the U.S. have enjoyed good relations historically, and there is a need for further improvement,” he said. He reiterated the importance of Pakistan maintaining cordial relations with all its neighbouring countries.

In response to recent incidents in London, Nawaz Sharif condemned an attack on the car of former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, calling it a part of a “highly disrespectful culture” that he claims has been encouraged by opposition forces. He pointed out that young individuals have been incited to act disruptively, chasing cars and engaging in public humiliation of others. Sharif criticised the opposition for allowing this trend to grow during their time in office and further fuelling it now. “If people must protest, they should do so respectfully,” he advised, noting that such actions only harm the country’s image.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formally communicated India’s reluctance to participate in the Champions Trophy to the Pakistani government, citing the firm stance of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on not sending the team to Pakistan.
