NEPRA to Hear Petition on Possible Power Tariff Hike
Islamabad: Electricity prices in Pakistan are likely to increase for one month as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is set to hear a petition filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) today.

The CPPA has requested an increase of PKR 0.19 per unit under the fuel price adjustment for August. According to official data, 102.94 billion units of electricity were supplied to distribution companies (DISCOs) during the month.

Figures show that the average cost of electricity generation in August stood at PKR 7.50 per unit against the reference cost of PKR 7.31 per unit. Electricity generated from local coal cost PKR 12.01 per unit, while imported coal-based generation stood at PKR 14.07 per unit.

Meanwhile, furnace oil-based generation cost PKR 33 per unit, natural gas PKR 13.43, and LNG PKR 21.73 per unit.

Imported electricity from Iran was the most expensive at PKR 41 per unit, whereas bagasse-based power generation cost PKR 9.87 per unit.

NEPRA’s decision following the hearing will determine the final adjustment, which could directly impact consumer electricity bills.
