Users relying on the Amazon Fire TV Stick for streaming content may soon need to consider an upgrade. Popular streaming platform Netflix has announced that its app will stop working on certain Fire TV devices starting June 2, 2025.

According to international media reports, the decision comes as part of Netflix’s shift toward supporting modern video formats, aiming to improve streaming quality while using less data.

Netflix plans to phase out older devices that do not support the AV1 codec, a newer video compression technology designed to deliver high-quality video with lower bandwidth usage. Devices that lack the necessary hardware capabilities to process this format will no longer be compatible with the Netflix app.

While the initial reports did not specify which Fire TV models would be discontinued, it’s anticipated that the older first-generation Fire TV Sticks and other obsolete streaming devices will be the most impacted.

The move is part of a broader trend among tech companies to streamline support for older technology and push for more efficient and sustainable streaming experiences. Users are advised to check their device model and consider upgrading to continue using Netflix seamlessly after the announced cutoff date.
