Pakistan and India Exchange Prisoner Lists Under Bilateral Agreement

ISLAMABAD: By the bilateral Consular Access Agreement of 2008, Pakistan and India on Tuesday exchanged lists of prisoners currently held in each other’s custody.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan confirmed that a list containing the names of 246 Indian prisoners, including 193 fishermen and 53 other detainees, was handed over to a representative from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

In parallel, the Indian government shared a list with Pakistan’s High Commission in New Delhi, detailing 463 Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails. This includes 81 fishermen and 382 other individuals.

The exchange is part of a twice-yearly protocol, which requires both countries to share prisoner information on January 1st and July 1st each year.

The Foreign Office urged India to expedite the release and repatriation of Pakistani nationals who have already completed their sentences. It also called for special consular access to be granted to mentally ill and physically challenged Pakistani detainees for identification purposes.

Furthermore, Pakistan has requested immediate access for prisoners who have not yet received consular visitation and pressed India to ensure the safety and well-being of all Pakistani nationals detained in Indian facilities.
