Pakistan, Ethiopia Agree to Strengthen Defence, Aviation Ties

Pakistan and Ethiopia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in defence and aviation to deepen their bilateral relations. The agreement was reached during a meeting held in Islamabad on Monday. Ethiopia’s Special Envoy, Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, met with Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif. Both sides expressed strong interest in expanding strategic and economic partnerships. They emphasized the importance of mutual growth and regional stability.
During the meeting, Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula highlighted key achievements by Ethiopia. He spoke about the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). He stressed that the dam promotes fair water use and regional unity. He also assured that the project would not harm any neighboring country. Ethiopia sees this development as a symbol of peace and progress.
Dr. Abdula also discussed Ethiopia’s growing aviation sector. He expressed interest in increasing flights between Ethiopia and Pakistan. Currently, flights are limited to Karachi, but expansion is planned. The envoy hoped stronger air links would boost trade and tourism. He invited Pakistan to explore investment opportunities in Ethiopian aviation.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif praised Ethiopia’s leadership and reforms. He lauded Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s efforts in transforming Ethiopia’s economy. He also appreciated Ethiopia’s role in promoting peace in the Horn of Africa. Pakistan, he said, fully supports these efforts and shares Ethiopia’s vision. Both sides agreed to maintain close diplomatic engagement.
This meeting reflects a positive shift in Pakistan–Ethiopia relations. With enhanced defence and aviation ties, both countries aim to build long-term cooperation. Stronger relations will open new avenues for trade, security, and regional integration. The leaders expressed confidence in a shared future based on respect and development.
