Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in public health as the World Health Organisation (WHO) has officially recognised the country for successfully eliminating trachoma, a leading cause of preventable blindness.

According to the spokesperson for the Ministry of National Health Services, the award was presented during the World Health Assembly held in Geneva. Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal received the honorary certificate from the WHO Director-General in a special ceremony acknowledging Pakistan’s public health achievements.

Health Minister Mustafa Kamal described the recognition as a historic milestone for Pakistan. He stated:

“This is a moment of pride for the nation and a testament to our commitment to improving public health. Our journey against trachoma has been challenging, but we remained focused and succeeded.”

The minister also reaffirmed the government’s strong resolve to eliminate polio, following the success against trachoma.

Trachoma is a bacterial infection of the eye that can lead to permanent blindness if left untreated. It is commonly found in poor and underserved regions with limited access to clean water and sanitation. With sustained medical interventions, awareness campaigns, and nationwide treatment programs, Pakistan has now been declared free of the disease as a public health concern.
