Pakistan celebrated National Voters’ Day on Saturday to highlight the significance of voting, encourage increased electoral participation, and remind citizens of the value of every individual vote. The day serves as an important platform to strengthen democratic principles and emphasise the role of voters in shaping the nation’s future.

Designated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in 2017, December 7 marks National Voters’ Day in commemoration of the first general elections held in Pakistan on this date in 1970. The observance acts as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the country’s democratic system while promoting awareness about voter registration and political engagement.

The central goal of National Voters’ Day is to motivate citizens—especially young and first-time voters—to register and actively participate in the electoral process. In a message on the occasion, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) underscored voting as a fundamental duty and a vital mechanism to support the political and economic progress of the nation.

“Democracy is an ongoing process, and the role of each citizen is crucial,” the CEC stated, stressing that voting is not just a ceremonial action but a powerful and peaceful means to secure citizens’ rights and shape national policies.

On this day, the ECP called on all eligible individuals to ensure their voter registration is up to date and to take part in upcoming elections. The Commission particularly emphasised engaging the youth in the democratic process, urging them to register and exercise their right to vote.

Through this initiative, National Voters’ Day aims to empower citizens with awareness about their electoral rights and responsibilities while fostering a culture of active participation. By strengthening voter engagement, Pakistan strives to ensure the continued growth and stability of its democratic framework.
