Pakistan Railways to Install Signal Jammers on Trains

ISLAMABAD –In a move to counter the growing threat of terrorism, Pakistan Railways has announced the installation of signal jammers in all trains to enhance the safety of passengers and railway infrastructure.
Officials stated that each train will be fitted with three signal jammers to help prevent remote-controlled explosive attacks. The decision comes in the wake of the October 7 blast on the Jaffar Express near Shikarpur, which led to the derailment of five carriages and injuries to six passengers.
In addition to installing jammers, Pakistan Railways will also intensify security patrols along sensitive railway routes. The decision was made during a recent meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Railways, which also addressed land encroachment issues.
During the meeting, it was revealed that of the 16,000 acres of railway land nationwide, approximately 3,253 acres remain illegally occupied. Among these, 457 acres have been taken over by influential individuals. The committee recommended strict measures to reclaim encroached land and protect railway assets.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Railways has reported generating Rs 13.547 billion in revenue over the past five financial years through the leasing of commercial and agricultural land. Approximately 14,042 acres have been leased via open and competitive bidding, under the Railway Property and Land Rules, 2023, approved by the Federal Cabinet.
An official from the Ministry of Railways explained that the leasing process is managed transparently and aims to turn the department into a revenue-generating entity. These efforts are being led by the Real Estate Development and Marketing Company (REDAMCO), a subsidiary of the Ministry.
The department also confirmed plans to expedite anti-encroachment operations across the country to reclaim land illegally held by individuals, groups, and organizations.
Pakistan Railways says these combined security and revenue measures are part of a broader strategy to modernize operations, enhance safety, and improve financial sustainability.
