The National Institute of Health (NIH) has confirmed another polio case, this time from Hyderabad, Sindh. This brings Pakistan’s total polio cases in 2025 to 27. According to the National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC), Sindh has now reported seven cases. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains the worst-hit with 18 cases, while Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan have reported one each. Health officials warn that polio remains incurable and can cause permanent disability.

Vaccination is still the only effective protection against the polio virus. The NEOC is urging parents to ensure children receive polio drops. A nationwide campaign is scheduled for October 13 to 19. Over 400,000 health workers will visit homes across the country. Officials are calling on parents, teachers, religious scholars, and media to support the campaign.

The new case comes at a time of growing global concern over polio eradication. The Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) recently issued a strong warning in its latest report. Titled “The Glass Mountain,” the report highlights ongoing viral transmission and growing threats to eradication efforts. The IMB said 37 years and $22 billion in global investment are now at risk. The challenges include geopolitical instability and funding shortages.

IMB Chairman Sir Liam Donaldson directly addressed these concerns in a letter to the WHO Director-General. He said early hope in 2023 has faded due to a resurgence of polio in key areas. Pakistan and Afghanistan, both historic polio hotspots, have seen the virus return. The IMB warned that unless urgent action is taken, progress could collapse completely.

In conclusion, Pakistan’s rising polio cases reflect deeper issues in the global fight to eradicate the disease. While health workers continue their efforts, public support is vital. International experts stress that stronger coordination, better funding, and consistent vaccination are needed. The October campaign may be a critical moment in turning the tide against polio.
