Pakistan says talks ongoing but counter terror operation unchanged

Pakistan on Thursday confirmed that talks with Afghanistan are continuing under a trilateral mechanism involving China. However, officials made it clear that there is no change in the country’s counterterrorism policy, with Operation Ghazab Lil Haq continuing without interruption.
Speaking at a weekly briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan’s participation in the talks in Ürümqi should not be seen as a policy shift. He stressed that security operations remain active and ongoing despite diplomatic engagement.
According to Andrabi, Pakistani security forces have continued counterterrorism actions in recent days. Therefore, he emphasized that the operation is proceeding as planned and is not affected by the ongoing discussions. He added that Pakistan has always supported credible dialogue aimed at eliminating militant sanctuaries and preventing cross-border terrorism.

The spokesperson confirmed that a Pakistani delegation is currently attending the Trilateral Counterterrorism Cooperation Mechanism meeting with China and Afghanistan. He noted that meaningful progress depends largely on Afghanistan’s actions. In particular, he said Kabul must take clear and verifiable steps against groups using its territory against Pakistan.
Responding to questions about the Afghan Taliban, Andrabi acknowledged recent statements of intent but pointed out that past commitments, including those made in the 2021 Doha agreement, were not fully implemented. He stressed the need for written and verifiable assurances.
On broader diplomacy, Andrabi said Pakistan’s five-point peace initiative has received positive feedback from regional and international partners, including the United States. He also noted ongoing cooperation with countries such as Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt on regional peace efforts.
Despite regional challenges, Pakistan reiterated its commitment to dialogue and diplomacy. Officials maintained that Islamabad will continue to play a constructive role while ensuring national security priorities remain intact.
