Pakistan Slashes Port Charges by 50% at Karachi Port

In a bold move to promote environmental sustainability and reduce trade logistics costs, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced a significant 50% reduction in port charges at Karachi Port.
The initiative aims to cut the carbon footprint of port operations, promote eco-friendly shipping, and foster sustainable economic growth in Pakistan’s maritime sector.
Speaking at a press briefing, Minister Chaudhry stated that the reduction in port charges is part of a larger national strategy to decarbonise maritime logistics and improve energy efficiency at Pakistani ports.
“This is not just a financial adjustment—it’s a step toward modernising port infrastructure and aligning Pakistan’s maritime operations with global environmental benchmarks,” the minister emphasised.
The 50% reduction in port charges is expected to:
- Lower operational costs for shipping and logistics companies
- Encourage the use of cleaner technologies by reducing emissions-related expenses.
- Attract international trade partners by offering competitive port fees.
- Support Pakistan’s commitment to global climate goals and sustainable development
The minister added that the decision is aligned with the government’s push towards smart maritime practices, which includes investment in digital systems, green energy, and low-emission cargo handling technologies.
This policy shift is a core component of Pakistan’s National Maritime Strategy, which envisions:
- Upgrading port infrastructure to meet future demand
- Minimising the environmental impact of trade routes
- Fostering green innovation in maritime logistics
- Building resilient and sustainable port cities
Minister Chaudhry reaffirmed his commitment to positioning Pakistan’s maritime sector in line with international environmental protocols, including those set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the Paris Climate Agreement.
“Our ports must evolve with the global shipping ecosystem. This reduction is a strategic signal that Pakistan is ready for responsible, climate-conscious trade,” he said.
