Two prominent Pakistani-origin politicians, Iqra Khalid and Salma Zahid, have been re-elected to Canada’s Parliament, reinforcing the vital role of Pakistani-Canadians in shaping the country’s political landscape.

Liberal MP Iqra Khalid won her fourth consecutive term representing Mississauga—Erin Mills, securing victory by more than 5,000 votes. Overcome with emotion after the results, Khalid celebrated with her family. She moved to Canada from Pakistan in 1998, later earning a criminology degree from York University and a law degree from the University of Michigan.

Known for her strong advocacy on human rights, Khalid has served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. She also introduced the notable Motion 103, urging a national strategy against systemic racism and religious discrimination.

Meanwhile, Salma Zahid retained her seat in Scarborough Centre—Don Valley East with 21,000 votes. First elected in 2015, Zahid has a background in public service and community organising. She holds an MBA from Quaid-e-Azam University and a master’s degree from the University of London.

A vocal supporter of multiculturalism and minority rights, Zahid has spoken out against global injustices, including the plight of Rohingya Muslims. She also plays a key role in the Canada-Palestine Parliamentary Friendship Group.
