Pakistan's first animated film to be screened in US cinemas

A proud moment for Pakistan’s creative industry as its first-ever hand-drawn animated film, The Glassworker, officially premieres in cinemas across the United States. The film marks a milestone not only for Pakistan’s animation industry but also stands as a powerful testament to the country’s growing global artistic presence.

Created and directed by young animator Usman Riaz, The Glassworker is a deeply emotional narrative that follows the lives of two individuals from contrasting backgrounds. The story centres around a boy who works in his father’s glass workshop and a girl — the daughter of a military officer — struggling with the emotional effects of conflict and separation. The film explores themes of art, love, war, and identity through a rich and immersive visual experience.

What makes this project especially remarkable is the immense dedication behind its production. Usman Riaz and his team at Mano Animation Studios crafted 1,477 unique scene cuts and over 2,300 character illustrations to bring the film to life. A total of 230 actors, both local and international, lent their voices and talents to the film.

Production company Watermelon Pictures shared the announcement of the U.S. release on their official Instagram, celebrating it as the first Pakistani animated film to reach American audiences. Co-founder Hamza Ali also revealed that the film has been submitted for consideration at the 2025 Academy Awards, calling it “a powerful, emotional journey that will resonate with viewers worldwide.”

The Glassworker is not just a cinematic achievement — it’s a cultural milestone, redefining how Pakistan is perceived in the global creative arena.
