PDMA Issues Flood Alert for Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur

LAHORE — The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood alert for the hill torrent (Rod-Kohi) regions of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur districts, warning of medium-level flooding due to heavy rainfall over the Koh-e-Suleman mountain range.

According to a PDMA spokesperson, the alert will remain in effect until 3:00 a.m. tonight as water flows remain elevated in several hill torrents.

“Medium to high flood flows were recorded last night through Rod Kohis in Rajanpur,” the spokesperson said. The Chhachhar hill torrent alone saw a high flood discharge of 37,200 cusecs, while Patok Rod-Kohi recorded 11,309 cusecs, and Zangi Rod-Kohi saw 10,739 cusecs. A medium-level flow of 8,350 cusecs was observed in the Suri-Shimali hill torrent.

Fortunately, no casualties or property damage have been reported so far.

The PDMA also noted that the third spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue until July 17, and authorities remain on high alert to monitor the situation closely.

The statement explained that Rod Kohi refers to a traditional irrigation system unique to Pakistan’s semi-arid regions, where flash floodwaters from mountain rains are channelled through natural torrents to irrigate foothill plains. This centuries-old method remains vital for agriculture in the region but also poses flood risks during intense monsoon activity.
