As temperatures continue to rise with the onset of summer, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert across the province, urging all relevant departments to implement preventive measures to protect citizens from extreme weather conditions.

According to a notification shared with district administrations, the PDMA has warned of a possible increase in temperature by 4 to 7 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The areas most likely to be affected included cities, plains, and southern regions of Punjab.

Director General PDMA, Irfan Ali Kathia, said that preparations are underway to minimise the impact of the expected heatwave. He added that deputy commissioners have been instructed to ensure essential facilities at public places, enabling residents to cope with soaring temperatures.

The PDMA directive highlights several key measures to protect the public, including awareness campaigns via helplines, mosque announcements, and media platforms — including print, electronic, and social media — to educate people on heatwave safety.

The School Education Department has been asked to limit outdoor activities for students and display awareness banners at school entrances. Farmers are also being informed about the potential threats heatwaves pose to their crops.

Additionally, the Local Government Department has been directed to ensure the availability of clean drinking water at public gathering points, including bus stops and railway stations, with banners displaying precautionary messages.

Veterinary services have been instructed to operate care centres round the clock and provide water at livestock markets.

The Health Department has been ordered to establish heatwave response units at hospitals, supply essential medicines for heat-related conditions, and set up mobile and permanent medical camps in busy public areas.
