PDMA Warns of Rising Flood Threats in Rivers Chenab and Ravi
Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab, Irfan Ali Kathia, has warned that the rivers Chenab and Ravi could bring more challenges as floodwaters continue to rise.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lahore, he said the water flow in Punjab’s three main rivers is increasing rapidly. At Head Marala, 175,000 cusecs of water has already been recorded. Meanwhile, water levels at Trimmu Headworks are also rising, and by tomorrow morning nearly 830,000 cusecs are expected to pass through.

He explained that this flow will reach Head Muhammad Wala before joining the Chenab near Kabirwala. In the Ravi, a flood wave of 200,000 cusecs has already reached Balloki, where the flow could rise to 220,000 cusecs before easing.

According to Kathia, the flow at Head Muhammad Wala may increase to between 750,000 and 800,000 cusecs. Authorities may even need to open cuts at the headworks to manage the pressure. From there, the water will move towards Shershah Bridge, where the situation is being closely monitored. At Ali Pur, the flood wave is expected to reach Head Panjnad by 4 September, carrying around 800,000 cusecs. Muzaffargarh could see a major wave of 900,000 cusecs on the same date.

He further stated that Punjab’s largest-ever rescue and relief operation is underway. Rescue 1122 and Pakistan Army have played a critical role in saving lives and providing support to affected communities.

Kathia assured that rescue work is not facing delays and all types of operations are continuing in the flood-hit areas. In addition, 22 villages along the Sutlej River have already been evacuated as a precaution.

He concluded by warning that the Chenab and Ravi flood waves could cause further problems. However, timely decisions have been taken to protect headworks, bridges, and barrages from damage.
